Luka Al-Khoury said young Syrian Christians who can take up arms should defend the churches and monasteries that are threatened by armed rebel groups, Al-Zaman daily reported.
“Our youth want the stop of projects that have targeted the identity and history of Christian-dwelling regions,” he said.
Al-Khoury made the remarks in reactions to a recent incident in northeastern Syria in which 12 Christian nuns were kidnapped by armed Takfiri groups.
He underlined that Muslims and Christians have been living together peacefully for over 1400 years.
He also stressed that Syria’s Christians will not leave their motherland.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the violence.
