A record 3,500 Muslims celebrated the birthday of the Holy Prophet Mohammed [PBUH] with a procession in the city of Leicester.

Followers from the city and surrounding areas gathered for prayers and lectures on Sunday.

The people assembled for the Eid Meelad-UnNabi procession following the Zuhr prayer at the mosque in Sutherland Street, Leicester, at about 1pm.

Devotees followed the route, which included St Peter's Road, St Saviour's Road, Hartington Road and Sparkenhoe, to the Central Mosque, in Conduit Street.

Police operated a rolling road closure as the walkers processed.

One of the organisers, Mustafa Malik, said: "We are very pleased to say we had a record 3,500 brothers take part in the procession.

"We are very happy it went very well. We would like to thank the police for their help in ensuring everyone's safety."

After the procession, there were speeches and prayers and the holy meal Niaz.
