Former Iraqi prime minister underlined that the Holy Quran is the pivot of unity between Shia and Sunni Muslims.

Speaking at the 27th International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran on Friday, Ibrahim al-Jafari said Muslims have some differences but there are many common things among Muslims, the most important one of which is the Holy Quran.

He said the Quran is a unifying book and when all Muslims hold fast to this book, unity is achieved.

“Today, we have gathered here on the occasion of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), a prophet who came with the Quran and Islam to unify all humanity,” he stated.

Al-Jafari pointed to verse 103 of Surah Al-Imran and said the Holy Quran underscores the importance of unity among Muslims.

He further stressed the need for moderation based on the teachings of the Holy Quran and said many Muslim scholars throughout history have made efforts to spread the culture of moderation and their path should be followed today.

“We should implement Quranic-based moderation in all issues including economic, political and social,” the former Iraqi premier said.

Elsewhere in his speech, al-Jafari underlined that defending Al-Aqsa Mosque and the issue of Palestine is a responsibility of all Muslims and urged that the conference pay attention to this issue in its discussions.

The 27th International Islamic Unity Conference is underway in Tehran with the participation of scholars and intellectuals from 58 countries.
