Rick Phillips, pastor of the Mazeppa Union Church, recently participated in a five-day discussion that crossed religious lines.

The seminar at the Witherspoon Institute, a Princeton, N.J.-based think tank was about Muslim marriage and was hosted by noted scholar Robert George.

Phillips said the seminar was called to look at ways the faiths are alike and to refute misconceptions about Islam.

“We focused on the complex issues like marriage and how Muslim marriages work,” said Phillips, who noted it opened his eyes to witness the gathering of people of different faiths with rich traditions.

The rights of women in Islam were among the topics discussed, and among those where myths were debunked.

“There is always a feeling that a woman in a Muslim relationship has no kind of rights,” Phillips said. “We went through how the marriage is set up and how the woman receives a dowry. There (are) actually a lot of things that give a lot of freedom to women in Muslim relationships.”

Phillips stressed that mainstream Muslims often see Muslims getting headlines as thugs, such as members of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

“They just represent a small minority faction that don’t read the Quran, don’t have any understanding of any orthodox teachings,” Phillips said.
