In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Iranian Quran activists urged the Saudi government to adopt the path of dialogue with its opponents as the Quran teaches Muslims to do.
“Islam is proud to advocate speaking logically with the opponents. Listening to what opponents say was the approach of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and Muslim leaders after him. Thought and thinking have always been respected in Islam and thinkers have had a special place,” the statement read.
It said Saudi Shias are just seeking to regain their rights and that the government should act upon Quranic tenets and take the path of dialogue with the opposition.
The Quran activists voiced concerns over the death sentence against Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr and urged the Saudi judiciary to annul the verdict.
Sheikh Nimr was sentenced to death last week by the Specialized Criminal Court in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. In reaction to the sentence, people took to streets in the city of Qatif in Eastern Province to condemn the move.
Amnesty International has called the death sentence “appalling,” saying the verdict should be quashed.
Nimr was given the death sentence on charges of disturbing the kingdom's security and making anti-government speeches.
He is the Imam of al-Awamiyya Mosque in Qatif and has spent most of his two-year detention in solitary confinement at the al-Ha’ir prison in Riyadh, according to Amnesty International.
