It has been funded partly by a foundation affiliated to Turkey’s Dianat (religious affairs department).
Esmail Balakuglu, director of the foundation, said the mosque will have four minarets and accommodate some 4500 worshippers.
He added that the planned mosque will also have a museum.
According to Balakuglu, it will take two to three years to build.
While the majority of Tirana’s 300,000 residents are Muslims, the city has only one mosque.
The Adham Beig Mosque can accommodate 60,000 worshipers.
Some 60 percent of Albania's population adhere to Islam, making it the largest religion in the country.
