A Bahraini police officer has been killed during clashes with anti-regime protesters near the capital, Manama, official sources say.
Bahrain’s Interior Ministry reported that the officer died late on Thursday after he was hit by a petrol bomb during overnight clashes in a village near Manama.
“Police officer Mohamed Atef, hit by an incendiary device which seriously injured him, died soon after he was admitted to hospital,” said Public Security Chief Major General Tariq al-Hassan.
Also on Thursday, Hussein al-Jaziri, a 16-year-old teenager, was shot dead in clashes with the Bahraini regime forces during a demonstration held near the capital to mark the second anniversary of the uprising against the Al Khalifa regime.
Following the incident, Bahrainis staged fresh protests in 50 areas across the kingdom to express their outrage at the killing of the teenager by regime forces.
Bahrain’s opposition groups called for nationwide protest rallies and strikes on Thursday and Friday to mark the anniversary of the popular uprising.
Reports say shops have remained closed across Bahrain since Wednesday.
Bahrainis have been staging demonstrations since mid-February 2011, demanding political reform and a constitutional monarchy, a demand that later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the Al Khalifa rulers following its crackdown on popular protests.
Bahrainis say they will continue holding demonstrations until their demands for the establishment of a democratically-elected government and an end to rights violations are met.
