Ahmed Al-Tayyeb made the remark at a session of Al-Azhar’s educational reforms committee, adding that more time will be devoted to memorizing the Quran at the elementary schools affiliated to the center.
He said Al-Azhar’s students who study at the center’s schools should get acquainted with Islamic sciences through the Holy Quran before entering the university.
Ahmed Al-Tayyeb also urged Egypt’s education ministry to consider fewer courses for elementary school students.
Al-Azhar’s educational reforms committee has proposed a new educational program for those studying at schools affiliated to the center. Based on the plan, the elementary school level will be divided into two three-year stages in the first stage of which students gain mastery over recitation of the Quran and learn the Holy Book by heart.
In the second stage, students will continue their Quranic education and at the same time take ordinary schools lessons as well.
