Muslims in Niger Celebrate Eid-al-Fitr Wednesday

Muslims in the West African country of Niger celebrate Eid-al-Fitr today, August 7.
According to al-Kanz website, President of the Islamic Council of Niger Mohamed Ag Ahamoudou Chafiou announced that the Hilal, the crescent moon, was sighted on Tuesday, August 6, in several parts of the country.
In a statement broadcast on the national radio, he said the Hilal was sighted in six regions in the country and therefore Wednesday is the beginning of the month of Shawwal and Eid-al-Fitr.
Sheikh Boureima Abdou Daouda, head of the Sahel Region’s Scholars Council and religious affairs adviser to Niger’s prime minister confirmed reports about Wednesday being Eid-al-Fitr.
Muslims in Niger began the fasting month of Ramadan on Tuesday, July 9, and ended the holy month on Tuesday, August 6.
