The French daily Le Figaro has published a report highlighting the rise of Islamophobia in the country.
According to the report, 78 percent of the French are opposed to Islamic Hijab being observed in educational centers.
A French polling institute held a poll for the paper asking if female Muslim students should be allowed to wear Hijab in universities. 78 percent of the respondents said no.
According to the results of the poll, only 4 percent approve of Islamic clothing in universities, while 18 percent expressed no views.
The issue of Hijab in universities is the latest anti-Islamic move initiated by the government of France. The move, which has been welcomed by far-right parties and anti-Islam groups, has angered and worried Muslims.
France’s High Council for Integration has recommended that any religious symbol ought to be banned in educational centers and Hijab, as a symbol of Islamic clothing, is no exception.
The propaganda against Islam and Muslims by anti-Islamic groups such as the National Front has given rise to Islamophobia in France in the past few years.
Some 6 million Muslims live in France. It has the largest Muslim minority population in Western Europe.
