The new administration and influential figures should use all the diplomatic potentials of the country to liberate Imam Musa Sadr and his companions.
Director of Imam Musa Sadr Cultural-Research Institute Houra Sadr made the remark in an interview with IQNA on the 35th anniversary of the abduction of Sadr and his two companions in Libya.
She said the government knows best its potentials and the measures needed to be taken, adding “The least we expect [from the government] is to consider the possible strategies.”
Ms Sadr hoped for close cooperation with the new government to secure the release of Imam Musa Sadr.
She said after the overthrow of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, a formal committee was set up by the Lebanese government to pursue the case of Imam Musa Sadr’s abduction.
“The committee’s members have paid visits to Libya and held talks with the Libyan officials. They are still working on the case but, unfortunately, the expectations we had from the Libyan government have not been fulfilled because work on the case continues very slowly and the required measures are constantly postponed.”
She underlined that Sadr’s family seeks his release not just determination of his fate because “we believe he is kept in a secret prison or location in Libya and there is need for concerted efforts to secure the release of Sadr and his companions.”
Asked about the role Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi can play in the case, she said when Imam Musa Sadr was abducted Saif was a child and was not directly involved in what happened by he may still have information about the case.
“Anyway, it is expected from the committee that it investigate from everyone who might have information about the whereabouts of Imam Musa Sadr.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Ms Sadr pointed to the activities of the institute, saying that it aims to promote the ideas and thoughts of the Shia scholar, Imam Musa Sadr, to the younger generations through publishing books, articles and lectures.
She said what distinguishes Imam Musa Sadr from others is his comprehensiveness as he entered the scene of action to implement his theories and tried to elevate the political, intellectual, economic, cultural and religious status of the society in interaction with people.
Houra Sadr added that Imam Musa Sadr always struggled for enhancing unity among Islamic schools of thought and among different religions.
She further pointed out that a special program planned in Lebanon to mark the 35th anniversary of Sadr’s abduction was called off because of the current conditions in the country but noted that the Amal movement’s office in Tehran is planning to hold a special program on the occasion on Tuesday, September 4.
Imam Musa Sadr and his two companions were kidnapped in August 1978 during an official visit to the Libyan capital, Tripoli, to meet with officials from the government of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
Since the Libyan revolution and the overthrow of Gaddafi, there have been many efforts to determine the whereabouts of the three but none has produced results.
Yet, the Shia world is still hoping to hear about the return of Imam Musa Sadr and his companions.
