Paris Library to Be Named After French Islamologue

The Mouffetard-Contrescarpe Library in Paris will be named after Mohammed Arkoun, one of the most eminent French Islamologues, at a ceremony on October 23.
According to saphirnews website, officials of the library announced that the ceremony will be held at the library with the participation of Bertrand Delanoe, mayor of Paris.
In an interview, the mayor introduced Arkoun as a founder of interfaith dialogue in France and noted that the desicion was taken to honor the French scholar.
Professor Mohammed Arkoun was an Algerian scholar and thinker of Berber descent. He was born on February 1, 1928 and he died on September 14, 2010.
He is considered to be an influential scholar in Islamic studies who contributed to contemporary intellectual Islamic reform.
In a career of more than 30 years, he had been a critic of the tensions embedded in his field of study, advocating Islamic modernism, secularism, and humanism. During his academic career, he wrote his numerous books mostly in French, and occasionally in English and Arabic.
