Red Juma Mosque of Tomsk to Be Restored to Its 110th Anniversary
Restoration of the Red Mosque in Tomsk, Russia, is expected to be completed in 2014 to its 110th anniversary.
In near future builders will decorate 22 -meter dome and will build minaret, whose height will be 44 meters. The total area of the two floors of the Red Mosque is 400 square meters. The mosque will accommodate 900 people.
The restoration is sponsored by public foundation named after Akhmad Kadyrov, which headed by the Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. Nizamuddin Zhumaev said that the total construction cost is more than 70 million rubles.
Red Mosque was founded in 1901 on the site of the first two wooden mosques, which were destroyed by fire. The construction of the mosque was completed in 1904 on the funds of the local Muslims.
In the late 1920s, the mosque was closed. It was used as cinema hall and then as a distillery. During that time, the building was almost completely damaged. The mosque had no minaret and dome, and only in 2002 the building was returned to the faithful.
