TEHRAN (IQNA) - Muslim students holding an Islam Awareness Week at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, are aiming to dispel common misconceptions about their culture.

The university's Muslim Students' Association vice-president, Hashmatullah Lafraie (23), said on the whole Dunedin was very accommodating towards different cultures but there was still a lot of misconception about Islam and Muslims.

''There [are] misconceptions about women's rights and equality and freedom.
''We want to offer an alternative perception.''

The association's public relations spokeswoman, Rinad Tamimi (20), said the week, which began Monday, aimed to dispel some stereotypes about the faith.

They said about 700 Muslim students from 50 different countries attended the University of Otago and most had positive experiences with the university.

University of Otago chaplain Greg Hughson also encouraged the public to get along.

''It's a very spiritual week for the Muslim community to invite others to come and learn more about Islam.''

People were encouraged to attend this week's events, especially the interfaith peace lecture at the St David Lecture Theatre tomorrow night and the ''Meet a Muslim'' evening on Friday at Alhambra Hall.
