TEHRAN (IQNA) – Supreme Leader’s representative and head of Iran’s Hajj Mission said 335 Iranian Hajj pilgrims are missing following Thursday’s deadly stampede in Mina, near the holy city of Makkah.

Hojat-ol-Islam Seyed Ali Qaziaskar added that efforts are underway to determine the fate of the pilgrims who remain unaccounted for.

“It is our top priority to find those who went missing after the incident,” he stated.

More than 1300 pilgrims died and many more injured in the stampede on Thursday in the worst disaster to strike the annual Hajj pilgrimage in a quarter century.

Hojat-ol-Islam Qaziaskar noted that so far 131 Iranian nationals are confirmed to have died in the tragic incident.

85 Iranians were injured and are being treated in different hospitals in Makkah and Mina.

He criticized the Saudis’ handling of the crisis and said if the Iranian medical mission had been allowed to help the injured, such large number of fatalities could have been avoided.
