TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the Islamic Republic is the flag-bearer of the campaign against violence and extremism in the world.

He made the remark on Saturday at the opening ceremony of the 2nd International Seminar on Environment, Religion, and Culture here in Tehran.

He noted that Iran has spearheaded efforts for a nuclear-free Middle East, dialogue among civilizations, world without violence and extremism and interfaith dialogue.

Iran constantly reiterates that the path to salvation goes through moderation and rejection of violence, the president stated.

He added that sustainable development cannot be achieved without peace and security, stressing the need for standing up against violence, extremism and terrorism.

Rouhani further underlined the need for protection of the environment and said without benefiting from religion, culture, faith and human values, one cannot properly plan and act for conserving the environment.

Rouhani further pointed to the coincidence of the Tehran event with the signing ceremony in New York of an international climate deal reached in Paris, France, last December, stressing the need for international unity and collective efforts to help protect the environment.

"Today, we are duty-bound to shoulder our responsibility [to protect] the climate at regional and international levels,” said the Iranian president.

The Tehran seminar opened on Saturday, the same day that a total of 175 countries, including Iran, signed the Paris climate deal at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The international agreement is aimed at fighting global warming.

The second International Seminar on Environment, Religion, and Culture has kicked off in Tehran’s Pardisan Eco park. The two-day event hosts delegates from 15 countries who discuss ways through which cultural and religious leaders worldwide could raise awareness on the importance of sustainable environmental protection.
