TEHRAN (IQNA) – Translations of the Holy Quran into the Urdu and Hausa languages will be released in Egypt in the near future.

According to al-Yawm al-Sabi news website, the Translations Committee of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, affiliated to the country’s Awqaf Ministry, is working on the projects.

It said the renderings are being completed and will be published soon.

Hausa is the Chadic language with the largest number of speakers, spoken as a first language by some 44 million people, and as a second language by another 20 million.

It is mostly spoken throughout southern Niger and northern Nigeria. It has developed into a lingua franca across much of Western Africa.

The first Quran translation in Hausa was published in Kano, Nigeria, and Beirut, Lebanon, in 1979.

It was translated by the chief justice of northern Nigeria at the time Sheikh Abubakr Mamhoud Joumi and a number of Muslim scholars.

Urdu is a Persianized standard register of the Hindustani language. It is the official national language and lingua franca of Pakistan.
