TEHRAN (IQNA) – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei hailed the Iranian people for their brilliant presence in Friday’s elections and thwarting the enemies’ plot to deal a blow to the country.

Speaking at a religious session in Tehran on Sunday, Ayatollah Khamenei referred to the attempts by the enemies’ propaganda machines to dissuade people from casting their vote, and said they did not miss the slightest opportunity to make sure there would be a low turnout in the polls.

The Leader thanked God and appreciated the people for their massive presence in the elections despite all such attempts.

Ayatollah Khamenei also underlined that holding elections in Iran disproves the enemies’ claims that religion is against freedom and democracy.

Iranians cast their votes in the country’s 11th parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections on Friday.

The polls wrapped up on Friday night, and vote counting is underway in all constituencies.

Iran’s election committee, which is presided by the interior ministry, says vote counting will most likely continue until Sunday. Still no figures have been provided by election authorities as to the percentage of people’s participation, but officials are satisfied with the voter turnout against many odds.

Voting hours were extended 4 times. The deadline was initially set at 6 PM, but Iran's election committee said voters were still standing in lines in many polling stations, and finally voting was prolonged until 12 AM.
