TEHRAN (IQNA) – The spiritual ritual of Itikaf (religious retreat) will not be held in Egypt’s mosques during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Arab country’s Awqaf Ministry announced that the decision has been made in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, youm7 website reported.

Itikaf, in the Islamic faith, is a particularly commended pious practice consisting of a period of retreat in a mosque, for a certain number of days in accordance with the believer’s own wish.

The Egyptian ministry has banned all gatherings in the country due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

They include Taraweeh prayers (special prayers involving reading long portions of the Quran) and Iftar (fast-breaking) events.

The novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, has infected more than 1,420,000 people around the world.

In Egypt, 1,450 cases and 94 deaths have been reported so far.
