TEHRAN (IQNA) – A representative of Iraq’s top Shia cleric Ayatollah Seyed Ali al-Sistani underlined the need for observing health and hygiene advice to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Speaking in a TV program, Ahmed al-Safi said that it is wajib (religiously obligatory) for everyone to protect their health, al-Sumaria TV reported.

He noted that neglecting health recommendations could affect not only the person but also others.

The public health protocols issued by doctors must be observed to prevent the spread of the infectious disease, the cleric added.

Classified a pandemic by the World Health Organization, the new coronavirus, a respiratory disease known as COVID-19, emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in Hubei Province late last year.

More than 2,800,000 people have been confirmed with the coronavirus globally and nearly 198,000 have died.

The outbreak has had a major impact on global sporting, cultural, religious and political events, with a host of events canceled or postponed.

Iraq has 1708 confirmed cases and 86 deaths from the disease.
