TEHRAN (QINA) –  Syria’s Awqaf Ministry said it will make a decision about extending suspension of mass prayers in days.

According to RT Arabic, the Awqaf Ministry said it is in consultations with the Health Ministry to assess the situation regarding the coronavirus outbreak.

It added that after reaching a conclusion, the decision will be announced in the following days.

Syrian Awqaf Ministry’s Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) council and the Union of Muslim Scholars of the Levant issued a Fatwa on March 14 allowing the suspension of mass prayers and Friday prayers.

Classified a pandemic by the World Health Organization, the new virus, a respiratory disease known as COVID-19, emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in Hubei Province late last year.

It has infected more than 2.5 million people and killed over 245,000 globally.

The infectious disease has caused cancellation or suspension of many religious, political, cultural and sports activities.
