TEHRAN (IQNA) – Egypt’s Al-Azhar Islamic Center issued a Fatwa (religious edict), saying that intentionally spreading the coronavirus is equal to homicide.

According to paltoday.ps website, Sheikh Salih Abdulhamid, a member of the center’s Fatwa Committee, said those who are aware of having been infected with the virus and refuse to take measures to prevent it from spreading commit a grave sin.

He added that all divine religions underline the need for protecting one’s health and that of others, adding that it is necessary to prevent the spread of the disease.

Classified a pandemic by the World Health Organization, the new virus, a respiratory disease known as COVID-19, emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in Hubei Province late last year.

It has infected more than 8 million people globally, and killed nearly 440,000 so far.

Egypt has reported 46,000 cases and 1,672 deaths from the disease.
