TEHRAN (IQNA) – A ceremony was held Tuesday night at the Imam Khomeini (RA) Husseiniya (religious center) here in Tehran to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei attended the event, organized on the eve of Tasua, the ninth day of the lunar Hijri month of Muharram.

It was not attended by people like last year due to the health recommendations to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Addressing the event, senior cleric Hojat-ol-Islam Saadi recited parts of the Hazrat Abbas Ziyarah (supplication) and highlighted several aspects of the Seerah of Hazrat Abbas (AS), including steadfastness in confronting falsehood and defending the truth.

Also, Mohammad Reza Taheri recited elegies in mourning of Imam Hussein (AS) martyrdom at the program.

Shia Muslims around the world mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the Sayyid-ul-Shuhada (master of martyrs), in Muharram, the first month in the lunar Hijri calendar (began Friday).

The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Moaweya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.
