TEHRAN (IQNA) – Algeria won the FIFA Arab Cup 2021 and the team’s coach dedicated the title to the oppressed people of Palestine.

Algeria defeated Tunisia 2-0 on Saturday to claim the title of the Arab Cup 2021 in Qatar.

Madjid Bougherra, Algeria’s manager, dedicated the title to “Palestinian people and our compatriots in Gaza”, al-Ahed reported.

Algerian and Tunisian fans also brought the flag of Palestine to the stadium, voicing their support for the Palestinian cause.

This is not the first time that teams show support for Palestine in the event. After the quarterfinal match between Algeria and Morocco which ended with Algeria’s victory, players celebrated their victory, not only with their national flag but also showed their long-established solidarity with the Palestinian cause by raising Palestinian flags and kufiyas.

That match was held amid growing political tensions between the two neighbors, especially following Morocco's controversial normalization with Israel last year, which Algeria has been consistently opposed to.

While some Arab countries have started normalization of ties with the Israeli regime, Palestinians have condemned the moves as a stab in their back.
