TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) thwarted a planned terrorist attack by Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) near the city of Samarra, the Arab country’s Saladin Governorate.

The PMU, also known as Hashd al-Shaabi, said a unit from its 42nd Brigade foiled the attack on Saturday, Al-Forat News reported.

The terrorists intended to target citizens and pilgrims near the holy city, it said.

The PMU forces discovered and deactivated two bombs planted on the path of pilgrims at the Sayyed Gharib district near Samarra, the PMU stated.

Samarra is a major pilgrimage sites in Iraq. It is home to the holy shrines of Imam Hadi (AS) and Imam Hassan Al-Askari, the 10th and 11th Shia Imams.

In 2017, Iraq declared victory over Daesh by reclaiming all of its territory – about a third of the country’s area – invaded by the terrorist group in 2014.

However, the terrorist group still maintains sleeper cells in some areas of Iraq and periodically launches attacks.

The Iraqi army and popular forces continue to carry out frequent operations against the terror group in these parts of the country.
