According to Syria’s official news agency SANA, the Abdullah ibn Abbas Mosque in the city hosted the prayers.

A large number of government and local officials as well as people of Aleppo attended the prayers.

Assad arrived in Aleppo on Friday, visiting the city for the first time since the start of the foreign-backed militancy in the Arab country in 2011.

Visiting a number of the city’s water and electricity infrastructures, he said Aleppo has suffered from terrorism and destruction more than other parts of Syria and thus the people should benefit more from reconstruction efforts.

Eid al-Adha fell on Saturday in Syria and a number of other Muslim countries while some other Muslim countries celebrate the auspicious occasion on Sunday.

Eid al-Adha is one of the most important Islamic festivals held after the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

Also known as the sacrifice feast, it is celebrated to honor the dedication and willingness of Prophet Abraham (AS) to sacrifice his son as an act of submission on God’s command.
