TEHRAN (IQNA) – Resistance commanders Lt. General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis thwarted the West’s plots against the Muslim Ummah, a senior Sunni cleric of Iraq said.

Sheikh Khaled al-Mulla

President of the Association of Iraqi Sunni Scholars Sheikh Khaled al-Mulla said the US that had failed to confront the two figures, assassinated them in a cowardly operation, Al-Ahed News reported.

He made the remarks in a speech ahead of the 3rd anniversary of the two commanders’ martyrdom.

Sheikh al-Mulla said the enemies had sought to help terrorists capture Baghdad but General Soleimani and al-Muhandis stood against them and foiled their scheme.

The blood of the two martyrs will not be in vain, he said, stressing the need for vigilance in the soft war that has targeted Iraq and the clergy.

He went on to say that all people in Iraq should unite to rebuild the country.

Lt. General Soleimani, who was the commander of the IRGC Quds Force, Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) Deputy Commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and a number of their entourage were killed in a strike by American drones near Baghdad International Airport in the early hours of January 3, 2020.

The White House and the Pentagon claimed responsibility for the assassinations, saying the attack was carried out at the direction of then US president Donald Trump.

Various programs are planned to be organized in Iran, Iraq and a number of other countries to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of General Soleimani, al-Muhandis and their comrades.
