TEHRAN (IQNA) – Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh expressed condolences over the martyrdom of five members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) in a blast in Lebanon.

The five were killed in a blast overnight at a base near Lebanon’s border with Syria.

In a telephone conversation with Talal Naji, the secretary general of the PFLP-General Command, Haniyeh underlined that the blood of the martyrs is proof of the Palestinian nation’s readiness for self-sacrifice and the people’s commitment to resistance until the liberation of the lands and return of refugees.

He added that the crimes committed by the Zionist enemy have failed to undermine the resolve of the Palestinian nation.

Haniyeh also prayed for the swift recovery of those injured in the blast, including Mohammad Jibril, a brother of PFLP’s deputy chief Khaled Jibril.

While some sources say an old rocket exploded in an arms depot on the base, a spokesman for the PFLP-GC has blamed Israel for the explosion, saying the Tel Aviv regime carried out overnight raids at the base in Qusaya.

Anwar Raja told AFP that five fighters were killed and 10 wounded.

The PFLP-GC was founded in 1968 after splitting from the similarly named Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

It has close ties to Lebanon's Hezbollah group as well as the Syrian government and has bases in Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa Valley as well as in al-Naameh, just south of Beirut.

Its founder, Ahmed Jibril, was based in Damascus until he died in 2021.
