Shia Muslims Mark Muharram in New York Streets (+Video)

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Thousands of Shia Muslims took to the streets of New York to observe Muharram mourning processions.

 

People from various nationalities such as Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan took part in the event that was held in Manhattan on Sunday, IRIB reported.

The event is annually held under the title of Hussain Day in the month of Muharram.

Some two million Shia Muslims live in different states of the US and they hold similar events in various cities every year.

Muharram, which began on Thursday, is the first month in the lunar Hijri calendar.

Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, hold ceremonies every year in the month of Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Muawiya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.
