IQNA – The World Assembly of Islamic Awakening hailed American university students’ protests against Israeli atrocities in Palestine, especially in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement released on Sunday, the assembly described the recent protests in universities across the US as a new phenomenon that had been unimaginable before.

It is the first time in recent decades that a political issue has led to a student movement of such magnitude, which means elites in the US society have reached a correct understanding of what is going on in Palestine despite extensive censorship, the statement said.

The protests also show that the gap between the US government and the civil society, especially the universities, is wider than what the politicians thought, it said.

Today, the US government and supporters of the Zionist regime in the country are no longer able to convince university students and scholars of their policies, the assembly underlined.

It further slammed the US government for its violent crackdown on protesters who have legitimate, legal and humanitarian demands.

Given the major role that universities and academic centers play, the violence used against the students will only push more people toward supporting Palestine and opposing the criminal Zionist regime, the statement underscored.

The World Assembly of Islamic Awakening condemned Washington’s repression of the student movement and called on other nations to take steps to support Palestine and put an end to the Israeli regime’s brutal crimes.

Columbia University in New York saw the establishment of a Palestine solidarity encampment by students last month. This act of protest led to arrests and disciplinary actions as the administration involved police to dismantle the demonstration. More than 100 students were arrested.

Despite the crackdown, similar protests have emerged across the United States and internationally.

The spread of these protests has been fueled by viral footage showing the forceful detention of students, professors, and journalists. These images have sparked widespread anger, igniting debates about the freedom of speech.

The protesters share common objectives, including urging their institutions to divest from entities linked to human rights violations by the Israeli regime against Palestinians and calling for an end to the war in Gaza, which has been labeled as a genocide by many rights groups, UN experts, and nations.

Since Israel waged a brutal offensive on Gaza on Oct. 7, more than 34,600 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and over 77,400 injured amid mass destruction and severe shortages of necessities.

Israel is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice. An interim ruling in January ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.
