IQNA – The United Nations Security Council is set to convene an emergency session to deliberate on the recent Israeli airstrikes in Rafah, which killed dozens of displaced Palestinians.

The meeting was initiated at the behest of Algeria, a non-permanent member of the Council, as per reports from AFP citing diplomatic sources.

Confirmation of the meeting also came from a Security Council diplomat to Russia's ITAR-TASS news agency.

The airstrikes in question saw Israeli warplanes launch eight missiles at temporary shelters in northwest Rafah on Sunday night, leading to the death of at least 50 Palestinian individuals.

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from international leaders and organizations as calls are mounting for pressuring the Israeli regime to stop the massacres in Gaza.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres took to social media to express his concern, stating, "There is no safe place in Gaza. This horror must stop."

Similarly, ActionAid UK, part of a global relief organization, remarked on the tragic irony that the shelters, intended as safe spaces for civilians, were subjected to severe violence.

The statement from ActionAid UK emphasized the grim reality of the situation: "Children, women, and men are being burned alive under their tents and shelters."

In response to the incident, Hamas, the Palestinian resistance movement, labeled the airstrikes a severe violation of a recent International Court of Justice ruling that demanded an immediate cessation of Israeli military actions in Rafah.

These events occur within the context of an ongoing war that began in October. The Israeli aggression on Gaza has killed more than 36,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, leaving more than 81,000 others injured. Meanwhile, thousands of people are believed to buried under the rubble of buildings leveled by Israeli strikes.
