Abbas Shamseddin ar-Rabiei said the annual procession helps to spread the Mahdism concept in the world and conveying its message globally.
The people partaking in the pilgrimage in their million seek to know the concept of Arbaeen and its teachings, including those about Mahdism, he noted.
He also said one of the fruits of the Arbaeen march is promoting confrontation with injustice and oppression as the procession is a yearly renewal of allegiance to the teachings of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS).
As for its contribution to the new Islamic civilization, ar-Rabiei said the Islamic civilization is based on certain pillars such as values and principles many of which are manifested and enhanced in the pilgrimage.
He said pious and righteous people carry the banner of Arbaeen and uphold its principles and through them bolster the Islamic civilization.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iraqi scholar referred to the message of Imam Hussein’s (AS) uprising and said it is for all times, including the current era.
He said that like in the Battle of Karbala, today’s world has been divided into two fronts: The front of the truth and the front of falsehood.
Imam Hussein (AS) would tell Muslims today to revive Islam, act upon the teachings of the Quran as the salvation of this world and the next lies in following the teachings of the Holy Book, and stand up against oppressors, he stated.

Arbaeen is a religious event observed by Shia Muslims on the fortieth day after the Day of Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the third Shia imam. It is one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world, with millions of Shia Muslims walking to Karbala from various cities in Iraq and neighboring countries.
This year, the day of Arbaeen falls on August 25.
A core mission of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), especially Imam Hussein (AS), was to clearly show the way to salvation and to warn against the paths leading to despair, said ar-Rabiei. “Therefore, walking towards the shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) symbolizes a journey toward salvation.”
