Suspect Detained in Connection with 2019 Suffolk Mosque Arson Attack

IQNA – A man has been arrested in connection with an arson attack at a mosque in west Suffolk that occurred over five years ago.

 

The incident took place at Bevan House Mosque on Camps Road, Haverhill, around 11:45 p.m. on November 10, 2019, UK media outlets reported on Tuesday.

According to police reports, entry was forced into the building after a window was broken, and a fire was deliberately ignited in one of the prayer rooms.

Items damaged in the blaze included a prayer mat and several holy books, among them a Quran. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene, confirming that no injuries were reported.

On January 31 of this year, officers arrested a 23-year-old individual in connection with the case. The suspect was taken to Bury St Edmunds police station for questioning and has been released on bail until April 27.

PC Jack Oakley, who attended the scene on the night of the incident, commented: “I attended this crime on the night it happened and not only did it cause significant damage to the building, it caused a huge amount of distress to the community who use the mosque. I hope this arrest demonstrates that despite the passage of time, we will continue to investigate crimes where new evidence comes to light.”

Oakley also noted that investigators believe multiple individuals were involved in the incident. “We believe there to be multiple suspects who were involved in this incident, and as such, I would appeal for anyone with any information that could assist our inquiries to come forward,” he added.
