AI Can ‘Revolutionize’ Quranic Activities: Minister

Speaking to IQNA on the sidelines of the 32nd Tehran International Holy Quran Exhibition, Culture Minister Seyed Abbas Salehi said that the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into Quranic studies is still in its early stages but holds significant potential for transformation.

"This year, we are witnessing the entry of AI into the Quran exhibition, but its presence in the Quranic sphere, especially in exhibitions, is still in its initial phase," Salehi stated. "This early experience requires further development, depth, and expansion."

He emphasized that unlike previous text-based technologies, AI can “revolutionize” Quranic activities by going beyond textual analysis. "AI is not just limited to text; it can contribute to areas such as calligraphy, illustration, visualization, multimedia content, and more," he explained.

Salehi described the current AI involvement as a starting point that should be expanded in future exhibitions, opening new horizons for Quranic studies in Iran and across the Islamic world.

Reflecting on past technological advancements, he noted how Quranic research evolved from manual indexing to digital search tools and wikis. "Fifty years ago, we relied on printed indexes like Al-Mu’jam al-Mufahras li Alfaz al-Quran al-Karim to study Quranic words. Today, technology has bridged the gap between research and Quranic studies."
