Kuwait Distributes Quran Translations in Mosques to Serve Diverse Expatriate Communities

According to a report by Masr News, 600 library shelves containing translated copies of the Quran were placed in 547 mosques across the governorates of Ahmadi, Hawalli, and Mubarak Al-Kabeer.

“The project was carried out in two phases with the backing of the General Authority for Awqaf,” said Ammar Al-Kandari, Director General of the Committee for the Introduction of Islam. “Each library shelf cost 100 Kuwaiti dinars, and the total cost of distributing 600 shelves amounted to 60,000 dinars.”

Al-Kandari explained that the first phase of the project was completed in November of last year, while the second phase was implemented in March this year. Each phase included the distribution of 300 shelves.

He added, “The Quran translations were made available in English, Urdu, Nepali, Tamil, Hindi, and Bengali.”

The initiative comes in response to Kuwait’s diverse population, which includes a large number of foreign workers. According to data from the Public Authority for Civil Information (PACI), expatriates make up nearly 70% of Kuwait’s total population of about 4.7 million.

Many of these expatriates originate from South Asia, including India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal—countries where the aforementioned languages are commonly spoken.
