Scholar: Quran's True Purpose Is to Shape Believers' Conduct

Karim Davati, a faculty member of the Quranic Studies Research Group, stated that the Quran is "not merely a book for reading, but a book for impact." His remarks came during a seminar titled "Recitation of the Quran: The Role of Meaning and Skills," held Wednesday at the Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies.

Davati, also a Quran memorizer, emphasized that the Quran was revealed gradually to allow deep engagement: "This gradual revelation is crucial—the Prophet (PBUH) and Imams (AS) constantly recited it, immersing their hearts in its verses until people naturally memorized it."

He cited Quranic verses to highlight its divine precision: "God says, ‘[This is] a blessed Book that We have sent down to you, so that they may contemplate its signs, and that those who possess intellect may take admonition.’ (38:29). Reading without reflection holds no benefit." Davati added that Imam Ali (AS) warned, "Whoever seeks guidance outside the Quran will be led astray."

The scholar stressed that the Quran’s purpose is to transform believers’ lives: "The goal is for our entire being to become ‘Quranic,’ just as the Prophet’s (PBUH) conduct perfectly embodied it. Imam Ali (AS) is called ‘the Speaking Quran’ because his actions mirrored every Quranic teaching."

Davati outlined methods of Quranic engagement, including tilawah (recitation) and tarteel (measured recitation), quoting the verse " recite the Quran in a measured tone" (73:4). He noted that the Prophet (PBUH) recited continuously to ensure the Quran’s preservation and transmission.

While acknowledging the artistic dimensions of recitation, Davati clarified: "Recitation is not merely art, but art enhances its impact. The Prophet (PBUH) adjusted his recitation to his audience’s capacity, captivating listeners."
