IQNA – A 40-year-old man has been taken into custody and charged in connection with a stabbing that left three individuals injured at the Hamilton Downtown Mosque on Friday, according to local authorities.

Hamilton Police reported that the arrest occurred on the evening of May 2 at a residence on the Hamilton Mountain. The man is facing one charge of aggravated assault and two counts of assault causing bodily harm.

The incident unfolded earlier that day around 2 p.m., when officers responded to a call about a disturbance involving multiple people at 221 York Boulevard, near Queen Street North. Police say the confrontation began outside the mosque and escalated inside the premises.

Emergency crews transported one person to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. A second individual received treatment at the scene, while a third later sought medical attention independently for similar wounds.

According to investigators, two suspects were initially seen fleeing the area, although witness accounts varied on whether they departed together or in separate vehicles. Authorities continue to seek clarity on this point.

Police have stated that the altercation does not appear to be motivated by hate and confirmed that the individuals involved were acquainted with one another prior to the incident.
