
The contest has been organized thanks to the efforts of the Mauritania Radio and with the support of Mohamed Ould Cheikh Al-Ghazouani, the president of Mauritania, Al-Wiam reported.
It is supervised by Minister of Islamic Affairs and Education Ould Sidaty Ould Ahmed Loly and Minister of Culture and Arts Hussein Ould Medou.
The competition has three categories: memorizing the entire Quran for the under-35 age group, memorizing half of the Quran for the under-18 age group, and memorizing a quarter of the Quran (youngsters category) for the under-12 age group.
There are 16 female Quran reciters attending the event.
A number of qaris and Quran teachers attended the opening ceremony of the competition.
Valuable cash prizes are to be awarded to the best at the conclusion of the contest, according to organizers.
Mohamed Abdelkader Ould Eladah, director of the Mauritanian Radio, at the opening ceremony explained the goals and content of the competition, its organization, and the various stages of the competition, and emphasized that this competition plays an important role in encouraging Quran reciters and strengthening the position of the Holy Book in society.

The Mauritanian minister of Islamic affairs and education, in his speech, stated that this event reflects the president's concern for the Quran and Quranic activists, thanked the organizers for their efforts, and wished success to the participants.
Meanwhile the minister of culture and arts referred to the significant increase in the number of participants, and said 2,434 people have participated in the competition, and women have a significant presence in this event.
This is the second year that specialized judging committees have been allocated to women, he noted.
