Dr. Abdul-Amir Al-Aboudi, the head of the Faculty of Literature at the University of Al-Mustansiriya, Iraq, said that despite the greatness of Arbaeen, its scientific, cultural, and civilizational potential has not yet been properly utilized, and it is necessary to explain the idea of Arbaeen at the global and academic levels by creating sustainable structures.
He made the remarks in the pre-meeting of “Arbaeen Al-Hussaini and Arbaeen Al-Nabawi" in Karbala.
This meeting was supposed to be held in the fourth month of the year at Al-Mustansiriya University, but due to the outbreak of war, it was postponed, he noted.
Al-Aboudi added that with the coordination made with the Iraqi Ministry of Science, it is planned to hold this conference in a wider space in the future and with the presence of scholars from the Islamic world in order to provide the ground for greater scientific and international participation.
Referring to the activities of the scientific and executive committees of this event, he said the essence of Arbaeen does not need to be explained, because today everyone knows that this event is the largest human gathering in the world and there is no example like it anywhere in the world.
Stating that the great scientific and cultural potential of Arbaeen should be exploited more scientifically and culturally, al-Aboudi said, “What we are witnessing today in Arbaeen is mainly the result of popular services, spontaneous and without centralized organization. The Iraqi people, without official coordination, have been able to provide extensive and unique services to the pilgrims, which deserve appreciation.”
Referring to the gratitude of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution to the Iraqi nation for hosting the Arbaeen pilgrims, he said although this popular movement is valuable, it should not continue in this way.
“Iran and Iraq have extensive scientific, academic and elite capacities, and this capacity should be used to enhance the scientific and civilizational status of Arbaeen.”
The scholar suggested that the Arbaeen scientific conferences should be held in a fixed and permanent format, and said the constant change of host universities will cause interruptions in the process of the programs and the loss of past experiences.
“It is better to select a university as the permanent host of this conference, in coordination with the ministries of science of the two countries, so that it can host this event every year with full preparation.”

He added that if the Islamic Republic of Iran agrees, Al-Mustansiriya University, and specifically the Faculty of Literature, is ready to host this conference every year and a memorandum of understanding can be signed between the two countries in this regard.
He also emphasized the need to launch a reputable scientific-research journal in the field of Arbaeen studies, saying that due to scientific and academic requirements, many Iraqi professors and researchers only participate in conferences whose articles are published in reputable journals.
