Tens of thousands of Mauritanian Muslims took to the streets in the capital Nouakchott to protest against the desecration of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

They held rallies after Friday prayers on January 10, atlasinfo website reported.

Protests began earlier this month after Ould Mohamed, the son of a senior government official, published an article deemed critical of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on his Facebook page. The article was republished by a leftist newspaper.

Demonstrators coming from different mosques in the capital marched to the presidential office and chanted slogans condemning the desecration.

They called on the authorities to bring the perpetrators of the act of sacrilege to justice.

President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz as well as the country’s prime minister and Islamic affairs minister talked to the demonstrators and promised to take measures to defend the sanctity of the holy Prophet (PBUH) and Islamic sanctities.

Ould Mohamed was detained by security forces last week after publication of the article sparked protests.
