The controversial preacher in his last Friday prayers sermon three weeks ago criticized the United Arab Emirates and accused it of “standing against every Islamic rule, punishing Islamists and sending them to prison.”
His remarks threatened to strain relations between Doha and Abu Dhabi. The United Arab Emirates summoned Qatar’s ambassador to formally protest against the remarks.
An aide to Al-Qaradawi had said that the cleric had expressed his own views and that he would not stop, adding that “Qatar allows him to say what he wants as an individual and that no one had called him over the remarks”.
The Egyptian-born Al-Qaradawi, who is a fervent advocate of Muslim Brotherhood, in his sermons also provoked Egyptian people against the army, police and Defense Minister Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.
Earlier this month, Egypt’s foreign ministry summoned the Qatar’s chargé d’affaires to demand the return of Al-Qaradawi.
The ministry said the cleric is wanted for criticizing the military-backed Egyptian government.
