TEHRAN (IQNA) - Muslims on Sunday gathered in the British capital, London, to mark Arbaeen, the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam.

Thousands of British Muslims from across the UK walked through the busy streets of London on Sunday, shedding light on the sacrifice, values and legacy of Imam Hussein (AS), Press TV reported.

Despite the cold weather, a large crowd observed the ceremony as they were holding flags and placards and chanting messages of unity and peace in remembrance of Imam Hussein (AS).

The organizers spoke of the importance of events like this as they helped develop a greater sense of community and togetherness.

“This is very important first of all, because for all the community, this is an opportunity to meet, so people from all different parts of the UK come here and they meet each other, they inform each other about the campaign, about the activities, so this is one important point,” Mohammad Ali Shemali, the head of Islamic Center of England, told Press TV.

“The second thing is that, this gives confidence and builds the capacity of the community to be able to bring people together,” he added.

The event was also marked in other parts of the world, including Iraq, Iran, India, Lebanon, Pakistan, and Syria.

In Iraq, millions of pilgrims from around the world went to the holy city of Karbala on Saturday to mark one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.

Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him), and his 72 companions were martyred in the battle of Karbala on the day of Ashura in 680 CE, after refusing to pledge allegiance to the tyrant ruler of his time.
