TEHRAN (IQNA) – A senior Sunni scholar from Lebanon criticized the double-standard approach of the West toward the issue of freedom of speech.

Speaking to IQNA, Sheikh Qazi Hunaina said when someone desecrates Islamic sanctities in the West, they try to justify it under the pretext of freedom of expression, but if someone questions the Holocaust, he will face fierce punishment.
Referring to the move by the French magazine Charlie Hebdo to print insulting cartoons of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), Sheikh Hunaina said this act of desecration is not the first as hostility toward Islam has been there since the advent of the religion.
He underlined that no such attempts by enemies in history have been able to tarnish the image of this great and holy character.
The satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo has on numerous occasions published cartoons insulting Islam and Muslims, justifying them as “freedom of speech”.
In its latest blasphemous move, the magazine published a cartoon of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) last Wednesday angering Muslims all over the world.
Muslims in various countries have held rallies since to protest against the desecration of Islamic sanctities.
Analysts say such actions targeting a group of people’s faith should not be sheltered under freedom of speech and that boundaries need to be defined.
Sheikh Hunaina further criticized the United Nations for remaining silent over insults to religious sanctities despite a resolution it has passed before to ban such actions.
