TEHRAN (IQNA) – Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei attended the third night of mourning ceremonies for Imam Hussain (AS), and his companions on Saturday, August 6, 2022.

The ceremony was held at Imam Khomeini Hussainiyah. Due to an increase in the Coronavirus pandemic, these ceremonies are held without people in attendance this year.

The programs, which run for six nights until the 12th night of Muharram (August 11), will be broadcast on IRIB TV.

They include speeches on the Ashura uprising and elegy recitations, according to the website of the Leader’s office.

Muharram, which began on July 30, is the first month in the lunar Hijri calendar.

Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, hold ceremonies every year in the month of Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Muawiya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.
