TEHRAN (IQNA) – A mosque in Stockton, England, held its first outdoor Adhan or 'call to prayer' on Friday.

Farooq E Azam mosque

Farooq E Azam mosque on Bowesfield Lane in Stockton became the first mosque in the North East to recite Adhan from its rooftop during lockdown. The Stockton mosque has been rallying to have the 'call to prayer' outdoor every Friday at around 1:15pm. With help from the local council the committee members have been granted permission to do so.

Members of the mosque have chosen Friday as it’s their busiest day with up to 1,000 people attending.

The outdoor 'call to prayer' lasts between one to two minutes and is no louder than Church bells - the prayer sees Iman Hafiz Rofiq recite the Adhan.

Adhan is recited inside the mosque five times a day.

Mosque chairman Tariq Sadiq said: "We want to thank the council and people who were supportive for allowing this to go ahead. A special thank you to councilor Louise Baldock and councilor Mohammed Javed.

Vice chairman Sufi Mubeen said: "The outdoor call to prayer support spreads the message that Teesside is not the place for racism."
