48 African Countries Attending Morocco Quran Contest

IQNA – The 5th edition of the Mohammed VI Quran Competition for African Oulema (scholars) kicked off in the city of Fes in Morocco on Friday.

Representatives from 48 African countries are taking part in the international Quranic event virtually, mapexpress.ma website reported. 

There are a total of 118 contestants, including 12 women, competing online in three categories of Quran memorization.

The participants represent the branches of the Mohammed VI Foundation of African Oulema in different countries.

The members of the panel of arbiters, including Quran experts from Morocco and several other African countries, are in Fes to evaluate the performances of the contenders.

The foundation says the competition is aimed at enhancing the youths’ bonds with the Holy Book and promoting the culture of Quran memorization, Tarteel, and recitation in Africa.

The Mohammed VI Foundation of African Ulema, according to its founders, is an Islamic religious institution seeking to prevent radicalization and fight sectarianism within Islam.

The foundation’s goal is to unite and coordinate the efforts of Muslim theologians from Morocco and other African countries to consolidate Islamic values of tolerance and critical exploration of religious texts.

It also aims to facilitate intellectual, scientific and cultural action by bringing together Muslim theologians from around the world to encourage the establishment of religious, scientific and cultural centers and working towards the revitalization of a common African, Islamic cultural heritage.
