In a Monday meeting with students ahead of the anniversary of the US embassy takeover, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei framed the dispute as "intrinsic" and not merely an outcome of recent events. He said the US must cease backing “the accursed Zionist regime” and pull its military presence out of the region for any future engagement with Iran to be conceivable.
He added that many of Iran’s national issues and the country’s sense of security can only be addressed via strength in management, science, military capability and motivation.
Addressing the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran — known in Iran as the “Den of Espionage” — he said the takeover should be viewed both historically and in terms of identity.
He said the incident “clarified the true identity of the United States and the real nature of the Islamic Revolution.”

The Leader explained the term “arrogance” based on its Quranic roots, interpreting it as self-superiority. He noted that arrogance isn’t simply believing oneself superior but extending that belief to dominate vital interests of other nations, as he said the US and formerly Britain have done by establishing military bases and plundering resources.
He referenced earlier events, saying the Iranian nation recognised American arrogance during the 1953 coup of 28 Mordad and through the 25-year rule of the late Shah supported by Washington. He recalled that the embassy takeover was not merely about accessing intelligence but uncovered a network of plots against the Revolution.
Regarding the iconic slogan “Death to America,” Ayatollah Khamenei clarified that US opposition to Iran is not driven by that chant alone but by a fundamental conflict of interests and values between the two countries.
Addressing questions about the possibility of establishing diplomatic relations with Washington, he said the US insists on surrender from Iran and that assumption is “meaningless” considering Iran’s capabilities, heritage and motivated youth.
“In the long run we cannot predict, but for now all know that solving many problems depends on becoming strong,” he added.

The meeting comes ahead of the anniversary of 4 November 1979, when a group of Iranian university students took over the US diplomatic mission, which had turned into a center of espionage aimed at overthrowing the then-nascent Islamic Republic.
Later documents were found in the embassy that proved it was involved in espionage and hatching plots against the Islamic Republic.
Each year Iranians commemorate the event on 13 Aban, also celebrated as Student Day and the National Day of the Fight against Global Arrogance.
