IQNA – The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) condemned the continued closure of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by the Israeli regime, characterizing the site not merely as a Palestinian concern but as a concern of the 1.8 billion Muslims across the globe.

In a press release, the union highlighted the deep religious and historical significance of the mosque, describing it as one of the most sacred places in Islam and keeping it open a shared responsibility of Muslims around the world.

It warned that the ongoing restrictions represent a dangerous and unprecedented development that could have long-term consequences for the site’s status and identity.

The IUMS stressed that reopening the mosque to worshippers is both a religious duty and a humanitarian necessity. It stated that continued closure or limitations on access cannot be accepted under any circumstances, emphasizing that the site holds a unique and central place in Islamic belief and heritage.

The union also raised concerns that the restrictions could be part of broader efforts to alter the current situation at the mosque. It warned Muslim-majority countries that such measures may lead to attempts to impose new control over the site, potentially threatening its longstanding religious character.

Calling for a global response, the statement urged Muslims everywhere to engage in peaceful demonstrations and public actions to express their opposition to the restrictions. It encouraged communities to organize sit-ins and other lawful activities to defend their religious rights and draw attention to the issue.

In addition, the union appealed to religious leaders to use weekly sermons to raise awareness about the importance of the mosque and the seriousness of the current situation. It emphasized the role of scholars and preachers in mobilizing public consciousness and guiding community response.

The organization further called on governments in Muslim countries to take concrete steps, including sending urgent communications to national leaders and working toward convening an emergency international conference focused on protecting the mosque and addressing the issue.
