This chair, entitled "History of the Quran text and transmission", belongs to a specialist of Arabic manuscripts, the paleographer François Déroche.
The institution of the Quartier Latin founded in the sixteenth century intends "to continue a long tradition of Arab Studies at the College de France and open a new chapter in our understanding of Islamic civilization," according to a statement.
"For the first time, the College de France will simultaneously bring its program on the Bible (Chair "Biblical Milieu" by Thomas Römer, founded in 2009) and the Quran," enthuses François Déroche in a presentation note of his teaching.
"I intend to revisit the Quran by taking advantage of the situation arising from recent research on the manuscript tradition of the early centuries of Islam and discoveries," he wrote.
François Déroche will give his inaugural lecture on Thursday. According to the principle of free access knowledge at the College of France, courses are accessible to all, without prior registration, according to availability of places.
The Quran, revealed by God to His Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) between 612 and 632, is the holy book of Islam, now the second largest religion in France, home to the first Muslim community in Europe.
