Malaysian Minister Calls for Reviving Islamic Endowment’s Golden Era Role
Zulkifli Hasan said Waqf could play a bigger role in advancing education, healthcare, research and economic development, rather than being viewed solely as sources of funding for mosques and burial grounds.
He said history showed that Waqf institutions were among the pillars of Islamic civilization during its golden era in Baghdad, Andalusia and Istanbul.
"During that time, Waqf was not only for mosques or burial grounds, but also supported hospitals, universities, research and development (R&D)," he said when launching the Federal Territories Wakaf Safar Tour Programme Series 1 at the Darul Kifayah Complex in Batu Caves Saturday.
Zulkifli said strengthening the Waqf sector could reduce society's reliance on the government while fostering a more independent and empowered community.
He said the Safar Tour Wakaf Programme aimed to promote Waqf as both an act of worship and a catalyst for ummah economic development through visits to projects that directly benefit the community.
"When people understand and see the impact of Waqf themselves, they will become more confident and encouraged to contribute, while helping to build a culture of Waqf," he said.
Meanwhile, Zulkifli suggested that the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) and MAIWP Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP) introduce virtual reality (VR) experiences to allow contributors to see projects developed through their Waqf contributions.
He said MAIWP's zakat collection had exceeded RM1.2 billion and was expected to reach about RM1.3 billion this year, but the Waqf sector had yet to achieve similar progress.
"We want to spark a new revival so society develops a culture of Waqf.
"Everyone can contribute to Waqf, and it is among the deeds that bring great rewards in the hereafter," he said.
